What happened
On June 18, 2024—Toaquiza’s 21st birthday—she was allegedly suffocated at a Syracuse Airbnb by Chacaguasay-Ilbis, a former schoolmate from Ecuador. Surveillance showed him carrying her limp body; prosecutors said he buried her in a shallow grave, then fled by Greyhound before turning himself in.

Ecuadorian national; DHS sources reported both he and the victim were in the U.S. illegally. He had earlier crossed near El Paso (Jan. 2023) per contemporaneous reporting.
